Climate

Hong Kong has a sub-tropical climate with warm to hot humid summers from May to September (25C to 29C, 77F to 84F), and a cooler season from December to February (14C to 20C, 57F to 68F). The typhoon season runs from July to September when heavy rains can often be expected.

Cantonese is the Chinese dialect spoken by over 88% of the people in Hong Kong; while both Cantonese (and traditional Chinese in written form) and English are the official languages. You will find that all official signs are bilingual, and most restaurant servers, taxi drivers and shop salespersons are able to communicate in both languages.

Since reunification with China in 1997, Mandarin, more commonly known as Putonghua – the official spoken language of China, has gained in prominence and most locals can at least comprehend it to a certain degree.
